FAQ Air Conditioners

What is the best size system for my home?

Typically a one ton system can cool anywhere between 300 to 800 square feet but before purchasing any equipment for your home, you should make sure your system is sized properly. Your ductwork has a big impact on how well your system operates as well. Poor quality and/or design can lessen your airflow and cost your money. Our licensed professionals can provide you a heat load calculation to determine the proper size and make the appropriate recommendation. Remember, bigger is not always better.

Is a larger system better?

No. A larger system with more capacity delivers less comfort and costs more to operate. An air conditioner is at its lowest efficiency at start up. A system with too much capacity will cool the house too fast (short cycling), turning on and off repeatedly over an extended period. Also keep in mind that an air conditioner only removes humidity when it’s running, so a system with shorter run cycles doesn’t remove humidity from the air very well.

Should I try to keep my system from running too much?

Every time your system starts up, it uses a lot of electricity and may not produce much cooling. Usually a system that runs nonstop will consume less power than a larger system that cycles on and off. As a rule of thumb, a unit that is either on or off is less expensive than one cycling on and off.

What temperature should I set my thermostat at for my air conditioner?

The average temperature setting is should not get below 20°. Remember, when leaving your house; try to avoid drastic temperature changes. Do not set your temperature back more than 5°; this will cause your unit to work harder to achieve the desired temperature setting.

What are programmable thermostats and what advantage do they have?

There are numerous programmable thermostats available on the market today that offer many new and exciting features. And because they are electronic, they are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can control the temperature in your home at different times of day without ever touching your thermostat. Because everything is automatic, you will never forget to change the setting on your own.

How often should I have maintenance done on my air conditioner and what can I do on my own?

Great question! How long do you want your system to last? In order to ensure maximum efficiency and life span, you should have it maintained once a year. This allows us to foresee any potential problems and prevent costly breakdowns.

Do I really need to replace my unit or can it be repaired?

If you been concerned your monthly utility bills have been on the rise, or that your unit requires expensive repairs, it might be much less expensive to endure the cost of replacing the unit instead of operating it through another season. The monthly savings on your utility bill might actually save you money. With new technology, today’s air-conditioning systems can operate at 60% more efficiency than AC units that were manufactured just a decade ago. In addition, if your unit was not properly maintained through the years and suffers significant wear and tear, it can actually reduce the efficiency of your unit, costing you a lot more to operate.

What do those filters do?

Almost every air conditioning system has a filter upstream of the evaporator coil. This can be in the return grille or in special slots in the duct system and can be a fuzzy-looking or a folded paper filter. This filter removes particles from the air stream to both keep the air conditioning system clean and to remove particles from the air. As the filter does its job, it gets loaded with more and more particles. This actually has the effect of making it more efficient, but it also increases resistance and reducing airflow. When this happens, it is time to change the filter. How long it will take to happen depends on how dirty the air is and how big the filter is.

How often do I need to change my filters?

Depending on the type of filter, the thickness of the filter, and how many pets you have it can differ. The basic rule of thumb is if you have a regular disposable filter it should be changed every 1 to 3 months. A higher quality filter should be changed monthly as they remove a lot more air pollutants from your system. Overall the more often your filter is changed the more efficient your system will be.
